About this role
Build the internal AI platform that helps Australian councils assess development applications and building permits, fully remote, founding-team scale.
You'll spend roughly 95% of your time on hands-on product and platform engineering, working across a Django/Python backend, a React frontend moving toward Unpoly, and an in-house AI orchestration platform. The other 5% is occasional customer or discovery conversations when product decisions need direct user context. There's no product manager or designer between you and the problem.
The team is deliberately small: two senior engineers supported by prompt engineers and town planners who use the internal platform daily. Most of the engineering effort sits behind the customer-facing products, inside a workflow platform that handles prompt workbenches, test harnesses, document processing, legislation tooling, GIS integrations and around 100 internal tools. That's where you'll spend most of your time.
There's no ticket queue here and no tech lead breaking work into tasks. You'll pick up ambiguous problems, design a solution, validate it with internal users and ship it. That suits some engineers well and frustrates others. If you've come from a structured org with dedicated sprint planning and design handoffs, this will feel like a significant gear change. What you get in return is real architectural ownership, direct influence over product direction and a founding-style role at a company with 16 council customers, no churn, and a clear path to profitability at 30 customers.
The team uses AI heavily in the engineering workflow. The expectation is that you'll use it to move faster on implementation, while applying your own judgement to architecture, code review and system design. They're less focused on your exact language background than on whether you can own a problem end-to-end.
What You'll Do
- Build and improve the internal AI workflow platform used by prompt engineers and planning specialists across council assessment and document review workflows.
- Design integration patterns across different council systems, keeping the architecture clean rather than accumulating bespoke one-off connectors.
- Review and guide AI-generated code to make sure implementation quality matches the intended architecture and holds up in production.
- Contribute to customer discovery and implementation sessions where product decisions require direct input from the people doing the work.
What You'll Need
- Senior, Staff or Principal-level product engineering background, ideally from an early-stage or highly autonomous environment.
- Solid system design and architectural thinking across backend and frontend, with Python/Django and React as the current stack.
- Hands-on experience building production systems that involve LLMs, AI workflows or agentic tooling.
- Comfort working fully remote with extended periods of independent work between check-ins.
About the Company
They build AI products for local government, focused on planning, development and building permit workflows. Three years in market, 16 council customers across two products, recently funded, and growing through word-of-mouth. The engineering team is intentionally small and very senior.
