Role details
Build backend systems that automate real clinical workflows, small engineering team, Kotlin and Spring Boot throughout.
You'll design and ship product features from concept to production, working across backend services, APIs and cloud infrastructure. The problems aren't always clearly defined when they land on your desk. You'll need to scope them, solve them and get them live, then improve them based on what customers actually experience.
This is an on-site role in Sydney with a small, high-performing engineering team. The stack is Kotlin, Java and Spring Boot on the backend, with PostgreSQL for data and Kubernetes managing infrastructure. Because the team is small, you won't be handed a ticket and told to close it. You'll have a say in how things get built and why.
The trade-off is that structure is limited. There's no established playbook for most of what you'll build. If you're used to well-defined specs and a dedicated platform team handling infrastructure, this will feel different. What you get in return is genuine ownership. You'll see your decisions ship to real users in healthcare settings, and you'll have the autonomy to push back when you think there's a better way.
What You'll Do
- Design and build backend features in Kotlin and Java using Spring Boot, from initial design through to production deployment.
- Build and maintain APIs and backend architecture that holds up under real-world conditions.
- Own production systems, including deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting across application code, databases and third-party integrations.
- Work closely with product and engineering to understand customer problems and translate them into well-considered technical solutions.
What You'll Need
- Solid backend engineering experience with Kotlin or Java and Spring Boot.
- Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and Kubernetes in a production environment.
- A track record of owning features end-to-end, including deployment and post-release support.
- Comfort debugging across application code, infrastructure and external integrations without much hand-holding.
