DevOps Engineer

Ansible automation and Python tooling for mission-critical banking infrastructure, Melbourne hybrid contract.

Role details

Ansible automation and Python tooling for mission-critical banking infrastructure, Melbourne hybrid contract.

You'll join a small engineering team supporting and improving enterprise platforms that underpin daily operations at one of Australia's largest banks. The work sits at the intersection of automation development and production platform support, writing reusable Ansible playbooks, building Python tooling, and owning incident response when things go wrong. You're the person who makes the manual stuff disappear.

The role is hybrid, two to three days in Melbourne's CBD. The environment is a large, regulated financial services operation, so there's process to navigate and change management to follow. That comes with the territory at this scale. What you get in return is genuine exposure to high-availability infrastructure that can't afford to fail, and the kind of production complexity you won't find at smaller shops.

You'll be working across engineering and infrastructure teams, so you need to be comfortable moving between a developer conversation and an ops war room. The team values people who came up through software development before moving into DevOps. That background matters here because the automation you write needs to be maintainable, not just functional. Desirable experience includes Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, and observability tooling like Prometheus, Grafana, or Splunk, but Ansible and Python are the day-one requirements.

What You'll Do

  • Design and maintain infrastructure automation using Ansible, covering configuration management, orchestration, and environment consistency.
  • Build and improve Python-based automation tooling to reduce manual operational effort across the platform.
  • Support high-availability production systems, owning troubleshooting and root cause analysis across infrastructure, applications, and automation layers.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, monitoring practices, and operational documentation as part of ongoing platform improvement.

What You'll Need

  • Hands-on Ansible experience for configuration management and infrastructure automation.
  • Strong Python programming skills, including building and maintaining automation scripts and operational tooling.
  • A background in software development (Java, C#, Python, Go or similar) alongside DevOps or platform engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting business-critical, high-availability Linux environments in enterprise or regulated settings.

About the Company

They're a global technology services firm delivering engineering and platform capability into large financial services clients across Australia. The team here is embedded within one of the country's biggest banks, working on infrastructure that supports millions of daily transactions.
